Quote of the Day
"These socialist writers look upon people in the same manner that the gardener views his trees. Just as the gardener capriciously shapes the trees into pyramids, parasols, cubes, vases, fans, and other forms, just so does the socialist writer whimsically shape human beings into groups, series, centers, sub-centers, honeycombs, labor-corps, and other variations. And just as the gardener needs axes, pruning hooks, saws, and shears to shape his trees, just so does the socialist writer need the force that he can find only in law to shape human beings. For this purpose, he devises tariff laws, relief laws, and school laws."-Frederic BastiatThe Law

Murkowski: DeMint cost us majority
Ring the bell. Demint vs Murkowski

(Politico) After ripping Sarah Palin, Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski isn't mincing words about another one of her high-profile GOP critics: South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint. "I think some of the Republicans in the Congress feel pretty strongly that he and his actions potentially cost us the majority by encouraging candidates that ended up not being electable," Murkowski told POLITICO outside her Senate office. "And I think Delaware is a pretty good example of that, and I think there're some folks that feel that DeMint's actions didn't necessarily help the Republican majority."

Members of Congress Get Rich Despite Sour EconomyIt's good to be the king...
(CNBC) Despite a long and deep recession, the collective personal wealth of congressional members increased by more than 16 percent between 2008 and 2009, according to a study released yesterday by the Center for Responsive Politics.

The study also indicates that a significant number of members owned shares of major players in the health-care and financial-services sectors, which were the subject of major reform legislation during the period.

Government says achieved objective on GM rescueWhat objective would that be?

(Reuters) - The U.S. government achieved its objective in the politically unpopular rescue of General Motors Co (GM.UL) and is prepared to relinquish majority ownership in the resurgent carmaker, Obama administration officials said.

The government's sale figures as part of GM's public offering released late on Wednesday show a better-than-expected initial return but taxpayers are still less than halfway from breaking even on their $50 billion investment in the company.

San Francisco's far left gets ballot box beating
Pink showing itself to be more red than blue?

Now that Mark Farrell is the surprise winner to represent District Two on the Board of Supervisors, I asked him if he'd gotten a congratulatory call from political power broker Aaron peskin.

"Still waiting on that on," he joked. "Go figure. It's a mystery."

He might have a long wait. Peskin and his far-left leaders of the San Francisco Democratic County Central Committee are still shaking off the ice water from the dunking they took at the ballot box.

Senators and TSA Defend "Love Pats" at airports
Love pats? Would that work in a sexual harasment case?

(CBS) Transportation Safety Administration chief John Pistole and several senators from both parties defended the new, enhanced airport security screening procedures as necessary in the face of a persistent and evolving terrorist threat in a hearing Wednesday on Capitol Hill. Pistole, calm and confident in the face of an increasing public outcry against the procedures, talked extensively about the repercussions of last year's attempted Christmas Day bombing being the impetus for the enhanced screenings before the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, TSA's oversight committee.
...

Sen. Claire McCaskill of Missouri said prior to Pistole's testimony that she believed TSA was in a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation, because people would be hopping mad at TSA if Christmas bomber Umar FaroukAdbulmutallabhad succeeded. She went on to say the new advanced imaging technology--which has caused uproar because of its leave-no-secrets imaging and potential health risks--is more of a blessing than a curse. "I'm wildly excited that I can walk through a machine instead of getting my dose of love pats," Sen. McCaskill said.Read the full article at CBS News.

Flashback: Wilkow and Rizzuto on GM's Crony Capitalism

(Washington Times) For all of the carping liberals did for eight years about corporate cronyism in George W. Bush's White House, they seem to turn a blind eye to the same behavior in President Obama's. With plans in place for a major overhaul in the health-care industry, General Electric is positioning itself to become a major beneficiary of these health care reforms.

Recently at the Business and Social Responsibility Conference, General Electric Chief Executive Officer Jeff Immelt referred to America's current economic crisis as part of a "reset" rather than part of an economic cycle, saying, "People who understand that will prosper in the future, and people who don't understand that will get left behind."
